Will we need to upgrade JSS to support Lion clients? Or will 7.31 work with Lion clients?
Also, does running Lion installer "break" Casper agent?
Thanks,
Don

Snow Leopard will do.

Highly, highly doubt you'll have to upgrade your JSS to 10.7 server. Not sure what the Mac requirements on the server side will be; what are you running now?

Currently I am running 10.6.4 on my database server, and we have 5
webservers that point to the database server all running 10.6.4 as well.

Dude, no time, catching up on my surfing magazines. ;)
The current JAMF Nation is vague. No mention that Lion "requires" JSS to be updated to 8.2. Based on the responses on this list (nothing definitive), a call to JAMF was in order. They responded and we have a definitive answer so we're planning to upgrade to 8.2 once it's released (well, maybe a week or three after).
Thanks,
Don

Is there a main reason you are not going to 8.1 yet? 8.1 is the first version that will auto upgrade casper apps when 8.2 comes out. So, when you upgrade your back end all self service clients get updated as well. Unfortunately I do not have a developer account so I haven't touched Lion just yet....but will ask the boss to get me one soon so I can download 10.7 client/server since we will be migrating to it next summer.

Hi Tom,
Unfortunately changes to our clients' infrastructure involve change control, so unless there is a valid reason for needing to upgrade to JSS 8.x (like compatibility with Lion) we won't be updating.
Thanks,
Don

I can tell you right now that a few things don't work (information gathering/display).
Also, does running Lion installer "break" Casper agent?
Apparently not (besides my testing, which was NOT an upgrade install, 2 development users already did "upgrade" to Lion, but the jamf binary is apparently still communicating with the Casper server).
Casper 8.2 will be out within a week of Lion's official release and will be highly, highly recommended, however. Is there a reason that you've stuck with 7.31?

Based on what you're saying (I'll need to confirm with JAMF) there is a compatibility issue so we need to upgrade to 8.2.
Thanks,
Don

Would performance increases be a valid reason? Self Service has gone through a lot of changes from version 7 to version 8. Though I can tell you since I am on a non pristine network myself (got mini switches, 100meg and gig switches all over the place coupled with brand new routers and routers that are 10 years old) that upgrading can be a pain. I think in the end it is worth it though.
The way I read in the Jamf nation letter is that 8.2 will be released with in a week of Lion and will offer full Lion Support. Does that mean, that anything older than 8.2 won't support Lion? Cannot say for sure, but it sounds like it may. I say contact Jamf and see what they have to say about version 7.x running on 10.7.

Nope, but compatibility with Lion would be. :)
I'm on the phone with JAMF now...

Self Service is completely rewritten in 8.2. Looks to have some nice additional functionality.
Some of the things, like detecting the Mac model and serial number, don't work on 10.7 with 7.31.
Don, I'd start preparing for the upgrade to 8.2...

Got a response (and OK to post to list)...looks like we're going to upgrade to 8.2 very soon...

I've seen the model/serial not show up only for the Mac Pros that are upgraded to Lion. iMac, Mac Mini has come through just fine. Curious if it is a model specific issue.
