Has anybody tried to VNC into a lion box? I get prompted for the VNC
password as usual, but then just goes to that grey linen background and
nothing else.

what VNC client on what platform? vnc from lion to lion works well.

Our app cert group uses Wintel machines, using UltraVNC.
