So

I got this text book, actually a series of text books that are digital. They require the CD but I was able to chop them up and with a little sym link magic make it all a self contained application. However, it requires Adobe reader to read the text book files....

What is the best way to deploy Adobe Reader with Casper? Do I still have to deal with that self healing stuff Adobe does to non admin users?

Thanks in advance,

Tom

Tom,

I cannot remember the details, but we have had issues if Reader was
installed on a Mac with Acrobat Pro. Or maybe just if Reader and Acrobat Pro
are of different vintages. The problem revolved around updates or licenses
as I recall. Perhaps someone else with a better memory might recall the
exact issue.

Anyway, if the target already has Acrobat Pro, no need to deploy Reader
anyway.

This is something that cannot be viewed in Preview?

Karl,

I wish to the Gods that it worked in Preview.app. Unfortunately the genius developers hard coded the executable to actually use Acrobat reader as the default reader for all their PDF files in the text book. In fact, the CD itself comes with an older version of Reader on it, and if not installed on the HD it will run the version off the CD. I am sure if I had the time and patience I could probably figure out how to make it use Preview.app instead, but then if I do go that route who knows what I functions I would break by doing so.

So, the catch is, we do use CS4 here. However, only 500 licenses per a building, so at most maybe half the students are allowed to use CS4. Only the graphic design and web students use it anyway. However, I guess I can go back to doing some creative scripting, and have a script check for Acrobat Pro, and if it exists just install the text book, and if it doesn't then install the current version of Reader and then the text book.

I've got the book working, it is the Adobe Reader part that concerns me, especially since it has all those ridiculous Adobe self healing and self updating features and probably puts files outside of itself (non self contained). Will a straight composer build work?

Thanks for your input.
