Anyone ever access the xserve over the serial port?

In a bit of a pinch, wondering what kind of access it provides (full ssh?), if it's enabled by default and how to connect.

I have a server in an "iffy" state and would like some sort of access. 10.6, new Intel server

Thanks
j

You can do headless set up over ARD admin by inputting the serial number if it is on the same subnet as your ARD admin machine.

I've been going back and forth with Apple on this issue for a while. They do
not support it, but I have got close by using the serial over LAN feature in
the lom. You may need to download and compile a different version of
ipmitool in order to do so.

I have got close to making it somewhat usable, however I have a problem in
which when I type a character it spews text on the screen.

Sorry,probably not much help
