Have been happily running 2 old MacMinis on 10.12 with Apple Server. Recently updated one to 10.14 Mojave and updated Server to 5.8. No problem.

Did that with the second one after a week or two, and could not no longer get Server 5.8. App Store only offers 5.9 that requires 10.15.

Anyone with experience with Server 5.9?

I don't have experience with Server 5.9. However what happens if you try and install 5.9 does it install a previous version? You can also copy the Server.app bundle from one server to the other.
