Assigning computers to groups

What is the best way to assign a computer to a group or department
during/after imaging? The only way I can find is to use PreStaging to set
the department, but ideally I'd like a script or other way of setting this. I'm finding it tedious to image a faculty machine and then go into the JSS
to find it and change the department and/or add it to a group. I have a
policy that looks for computers in the "Faculty" department, but maybe
there's a better way to do this with Smart Groups or otherwise?

    In the JSS under Settings tab there is a mass edit option where you can mass edit all assets in inventory. Contact your Apple rep and get a csv of all your serial numbers or MAC addresses on your PO, then you can base naming convention off of those and add in prestage options.

    If they are deployed and your network admin has already chopped up every location into VLANs, you can take advantage of their work and also do it by network segment. For example, lets say I know that building A has a subnet range of 10.50.50.10 to 10.50.100.254. I can then make a network segment of building A with that subnet range and every time your client Recon's in, it should update the network location and you can mass edit off of it.
