Database backup files shrinking rather growing

The database backup files (.sql.gz) are shrinking rather growing. Over the period of last 2 months we have added more devices and config. profiles in to JSS so this doesn't make sense.

We are not comfortable with the backup status we need to upgrade the JSS from 9.82 to 9.9.

It could just be down to your log flushing settings.

Perhaps try restoring one of the backup files on a test JSS and make sure everything is where you expect it to be.

They are all setup to either six or three months, so we would rule out this possibility.

It's possible that were was a spike in activity 3 or 6 months ago and the flushing is getting rid of all that extra data.

Looks like the backup size is increasing again. My personal feeling is that it's not something to worry about, but testing the backup by restoring to a test server would be a way to be sure.

The other thing to ask is did you upgrade the JSS around the time it started as well? that could change collection behaviours etc... so that over time it is normalising to the size the new activity level is generating.

I had this too a while back, the best way to check is to grab a box and import a backup and see if everything looks okay (Devices, logs, etc).
