A staff has asked us to install Final Cut Pro on an iPad we manage. Deployed it from school.apple.com and we can see it install on the iPad but when launched it says Try Monthly or Try Yearly.


 


I suspect it needs an Apple ID since it is subscription based, but we've specifically disabled the use of the app store and Apple IDs on these iPads. We don't want them using their personal Apple IDs.


 


So, how can I make this work? I can create a generic managed Apple ID (e.g. iPad01@school.domain.com )in school.apple.com but how do I assign it to this iPad? And more importantly, how can I make sure it's only used for getting Final Cut Pro to run (i.e. they can't purchase anything, they can't store anything, they can't backup anything to this account, etc)?

This is really a question for Apple.


In short Managed Apple Accounts (formerly Managed Apple IDs) have no access to the App Store, this includes both purchasing apps, and in-app purchases (i.e. subscriptions). business/school.apple.com created Apple Accounts are Managed Apple Accounts, and as such can not be used to solve this problem. The only kind of Apple Account that will work will be a personal Apple Account where the Final Cut Pro subscription has been purchased.


Please provide feedback to Apple stating Apple Business/School Manager needs to provide access to in-app purchases as well as Apps. The only hope may be finding out if Apple have a code that can be purchased, entered or provided, to the iPad that would enable Final Cut Pro to operate.

I second @wakco11 on this, you need to call Apple and see exactly how they handle App Store subscriptions with Volume Purchasing. This has actually been something I have wondered for a while now but have not had a need to run it down.
