Deploying MS Office 2008 12.2.3 Update

Has anyone had any luck deploying the MS Office 2008 12.2.3 update that
was released on 11-10-09? I tried dragging the mpkg into composer and
converting it to source but it just builds an empty dmg.

I viewed the package contents of the mpkg and there are a bunch of
different packages inside of it. I know I could take a snapshot but I
just wanted to see if anyone knew a way to deploy the update without doing
that.

    Correct, our window is 11:45pm to 4:45am. If the user is not around they can always get it from Self Service.

    Normally I delete the old and replace it. Overlaying the new is working out with this install, we did not uninstall the previous version.
    I just tested it for you, it took approx. 10 minutes pushing it to 1 workstation. The package is 542mb.

    Have you tried just dropping the mpkg into Casper Admin and deploying it that way? That would be the preferred way to do it I think unless you run into problems there.

    I haven’t done that yet for this update, but you are correct that it is the way to go pending testing that it works. They have in the past.

    If you are using compiled configurations you could drop the pkg file into your compiled configuration and recompile it. This will only update the image though as it won't create an incremental update for you to push out with Casper.

    I, personally, would just recreate the office package and replace it on the JSS then replicate it out. Then have it install the whole package again. I have seen too many weird things go on in my environment with partial installs. Of course, my issues are mostly environmental so many do not apply to the rest of you lucky people that don't have these things happen to you.

    I uploaded it to Casper Admin as suggested and used Casper Remote to test
    it on a machine. The install failed. The log shows:

    I agree with Tom. Sometimes adding the updates go smooth, too many times they have issues. Instead of troubleshooting/investing time why the update didn't work, we decided to take a little more time and effort to create the full suite. We have the bandwidth to accomidate the extra data.

    Cody-

    we create a smartlist based on the old version of office.

    we offer it on self service for a few days then we policy Office to all the users that are left in the smart group.
    all the users that are left in the smart group are the users that have not downloaded it from self service.

    That could be key as I think when a user is logged in, or even worse - running office - while you try to run updates I think it can cause issue. Scheduled updates at night when no one is around or done as a log out or boot up policy I think are best practices to deploy such things.

    Dan,

    As part of your policy do you delete the old version of office first or
    just install over top of it? My biggest concern with this is how long it
    is going to take to push a package that big.

    Here is a procedure that I have developed and been testing. So far, works
    well.

    For new install of Office 2008.

    1. Create a disk image (dmg) of the Office install DVD
    2. Using Apple package maker, create a "payload package" with a post-install script
      1. Drag and drop dmg to "contents" area
      2. Configure the content "payload"
        1. desination = /tmp/
        2. change permission for dmg to = owner=root, group=wheel
        3. Add a postinstall script
        4. Build package
        5. Add package to JSS and deploy via policy or Casper Remote.

    Sample script that I'm using:
