I read somewhere that there was a trick to deploy these apps in a certain way so that when they needed updating an Admin User wouldn't be needed to sign in.

Could someone give me the basic steps, please?

Also, would this step you are suggesting be replaced by the up-and-coming patch management service?

Thanks

Not sure about the patch management service, but deploying the app using VPP managed distribution will do all of that for you.

Thanks. Does this mean that the apps shouldn't be installed on the iMacs initially? They need to be installed the first time using VPP.

Just wondering if there is a way around that now?

+1 for VPP

I was going to say ensure that the App in the JSS has the "Make app managed if currently installed as unmanaged" option ticked, but it appears that is not available for Mac App Store Apps, only iOS App Store Apps.

Looks like you will need to remove and redeploy the apps through VPP. Depending on the age of the Macs you have you can potentially use VPP Fulfilment ( see here https://support.apple.com/en-au/HT203022 ) to get the apps for free. They can be quite expensive otherwise.

Yeah, I managed to get the apps through VPP fulfilment, but for some reason they are also showing up on the new Mac as well.

Yeah, they come preloaded with iWork from the factory so you will either have to reimage or manually remove the apps with a policy from Casper.
