We have a few users who've gone ahead and installed Linux on their Macs in a dual boot setup. Does anyone know of way via smart group / EA to detect these?

+12Not having any experience with it, I can only provide some possible logical options.
Write an EA that detects either multiple partitions (presuming the Linux is on a separate partition) and/or boot managers (like rEFInd, etc).
