I followed the instructions provided by the AFP548 article for obtaining the
InstallESD.dmg.

Is it normal to take 4 to 5 hours for “downloading additional components” to
complete? I’ve tried it with a Mac mini (mid 2011) and a MBA (mid 2011).
I’ve tried the same steps using three different ISP and the timing was the
same for all.

+21Nope, it only takes me about 20 minutes on an Air. I have not tested on a mini.

Additional info...
For the sake of testing, I erased the internal hard drives, including the
local Restore partition.
I booted to a restore USB key (Apple provided utility) and even tried the
new internet Netboot restore that's available on the new hardware.
My internet connection speed at work is over 20Mbps and my home ISP is
10Mbps.
Same results.
