I don't know that there's a way around this currently. The inventory record is based of the MAC address of the machine, and since both OSs are running on the same hardware, they'll both have the same MAC address, hence the overwriting.

I've heard that in version 9, the records will be based on a UUID instead of MAC address, which should change this behavior. We won't know for sure until the initial release though.

Not sure switching to UDID will help as it's tied to the hardware, just like the MAC address.

To confirm, I reloaded a MBP5,2 with two partitions. Its UDID is the same on both partitions.

We have a few machines with two partitions floating around here as well. There is also the problem of policy execution (it runs on one partition, but when booted to the other, it won't as it already ran).

Ahh, good point. The UUID is also tied to the hardware, so that won't really change anything.

Try recording the MAC address as a removable MAC? That ought to prevent either system from "claiming it".
