Hello,

Until now I've been somewhat fortunate to not have to work with Lion, and I've been watching your various posts and been thankful I haven't had to do anything. However, that time is over for me unfortunately.

of headache for Enterprise.

I've just encountered something that I find so annoying that I hope someone has a better answer.

iPhoto appears to be rolled into Lion from the get go. I noticed the App St
ore had an update for iPhoto and an update doesn't appear in Software Updat
e. If I want to install the update via the App Store I have to login with a
n iTunes account. You can't install the downloadable update from Apple's we
bsite either.

So, from here on out do I not have a choice but to update some of the iLife '11 suite via the Mac App Store? Or is there some magical way I can push t
hese updates out using an Enterprise class management tool like the Casper Suite? If I have to update some of these apps via the App Store only that's pretty much unacceptable, and Apple won't care. If it is truly an App Stor
e app I should be able to just package up the app into the JSS and push it out. My understanding is the App Store won't see updates for it at that poi
nt if was not updated via the App Store.

Also, we blacklist the App Store except for a few support people so I can't just let users run updates on their own. For applications embedded into th
e OS you shouldn't need to login to the App Store to update, IMO.

How are folks dealing with these types of issues related to the Mac App Sto
re? I'm reliving the nightmare that is iOS and purchasing apps in the Enter
prise.

Thanks,

Craig E

This was exactly what I found a week or two ago and emailed the list about.

The version that is coming baked into Lion is a self contained unit and
does not require files in /Library, everything is contained in the app
package. So just updating the app with a new version should be enough.

This is the method I am going to employ.

I figured as much. Went around with Apple on this about Final Cut Pro X as well.

It won't work with everything in the Mac App Store though. If the developer includes DRM in the App then to run it would require the purchaser to login to the Mac App Store.

Currently none of Apple's applications that I'm aware of have this, and it's what allows them to deal with volume purchases for their apps only right now.

Thanks for the sanity check on this.

Have a great weekend everyone.

We have Lion and were utilizing Composer to create packages for the iPhoto update - however, the iPhoto '11 version 9.4.1 is not cooperating. Has anyone figured out a way to deploy this update?

I thought I had this figured out when I spotted the updates available for download directly from Apple.com. However, when you upload those packages and run them, you get an error message saying "You must run these updates from the App Store". So still nothin doin...
