Morning.  Was hoping someone could provide some direction here.

I created a static computer group called "Archive" to keep track of all retired computers. 

I imported these machines by serial number using the MUC tool.  All seemed to be going well.  I then ran an action on that group to remove management from any machines in it.  Also seemed to work well.

 

The other day, I was updating inventory and added a couple more machines to that archive group. As it was only a couple (7) machines, I just did this manually through the JAMF portal.   

Now JAMF only shows 7 machines in that group, and I cannot seem to add the machines back in (manually) that were added with the MUC tool.  The machines still appear in the JAMF portal as unmanaged, but I cannot add them back in.  I'm assuming they don't appear when I search to add them to the group because they are set to unmanaged.  Is the MUC tool the only option to add them back in this case?   Or is there another issue?

@JamieR Unmanaged Macs cannot be members of Static or Smart Groups (they will be removed from any groups they're members of when they're changed to un-managed), only an Advanced Computer Search will show them.

Well.  That was counter to what I had seen in other posts.

So in essence, once you remove management from a machine, it is removed from any groups it's in?  Why were the 30 still in there after the fact?

 

Is there any way to acccurately report on this?

@JamieR I have seen viewing a Static Group show a unmanaged computer if that group hasn't otherwise been modified since the computer was un-managed, but as soon as the group is modified the non-managed computers are removed.

Only an Advanced Computer Search will find unmanaged computers (Managed is one of the Search Criteria, and the Value is either Managed or Unmanaged)

I use a smart group based on the Department - Change the department to "Workstation Locked".
