Curious to know what's considered best practice for monitoring NetSus software appliances (Ubuntu OVA). Web page checking? SNMP traps? BEM web checks? Syslog probes?

+6It really depends on what you want to monitor and how often. Ubuntu in and of itself has solid SNMP v3 support, so for basic monitoring of the environment, SNMP is a good choice. you can also integrate that with specific process monitoring.
Depending on what VM environment you're running, you can also monitor the VM from outside of the VM via SNMP and others.
