Hi,

Is anyone doing 10.8 imaging with Casper Imaging and Multicasting? A quick chat with JAMF today revealed that they depreciated their multicast image tool.

I'm doing it. I was never using their tool, however. I just run the asr process manually from a server. Then I use the jamf multicast script to connect to the stream and lay the image onto the client.

The application should still work I would imagine. Under the hood it is still just running an ASR multicast.

We have also used "Proton pack Server" in the past with success. You can find it here: http://alexkaloostian.wordpress.com/downloads/

So regardless I have to ditch our existing setup in some way ... Thanks for the responses!

We setup helper IPs on the switches.

Where do we find the Casper Multicast Script and how would I run it when netbooting these clients?

Thanks.

FYI...

According to the DeployStudio forums, ASR Multicast is no longer functional in 10.8.x and hasn't been patched/fixed yet. OS X 10.7.5 or OS X 10.6.8 is what you want to serve the multicast images from at this time.

ASR multicast works in 10.8.x.

I stand corrected then. 🙂 That was just one example of a post, there have been several complaints about ASR reliability with 10.8.x. Glad it's not as widespread, though I had issues when I tried it myself recently. ASR Multicast has always been flaky IMHO...

With the imaging I've seen in many environments, I've found that multicasting isn't worth the trouble... It may be a tick faster, but for the sometimes "stupid network tricks" one has to do to make it work well without blowing up other things, I've never really seen the need for it when imaging.

Our netboot data rates have dropped dramatically and we want to try multicast using Casper Imaging.

Can someone put a URL to the 'deprecated' Casper Multicast Utility? Or the jamf multicast script?
