We are thinking about changing our naming schemes for our school district computers, desktops and laptops. I was just seeing what everyone else does for their naming schemes. We manage about 4000 computer in 7 schools. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

+17I am interested in this too. Does anyone use PreStage imaging and give a Prefix, suffix, number? and have it auto populate computer names? Or do you manually put in a computer name for each?

+35We name via serial number. Simple to identify, & easily doable via Casper Imaging.

So shacsmd-a03456 for a shanghai (sha) common system (cs) mac desktop (MD).

This worked well for us.
Type of machine (I= Inst. Tech Center, G= general assignment classroom, ...etc), followed by standard building abbreviation. Hyphen, room number, W=Windows, M=Mac, followed by number (i.e., 001, 002, 003....)

Especially with those kind of numbers, I would look for something auto-populated.
Maybe the last few of the serial number, plus a prefix for building or department, and/or designate laptop v desktop?
+3The name via serial number is too long for my liking though it would be nice to automate.
We do V- or M- to denote location and last 6 of serial number.
