I assume that with any new hardware revision...

Sometimes you can get away with it.

& if you've not purchased for a while a combo update might be available to update os skipping the need to create on new hardware.

Yep. But sometimes you lucks in.

We've also created policies with custom triggers before that means that we built them from box. I.e. Don't wipe, just setup for our environment via a policy.

I was reading something earlier today that said that the 10J3210 adds
trim support to SSDs.

I have the new 13" and 15" mbp models. I have already created NetBoot image as below;

Just don't start up the new Mac. But start as target mode and make an OS image using Composer. Then use Casper NetInstall Creator tool from Resources Kit to make net boot image from it. This has net-booted 4 years old iMac, new 27" iMac and all the older and newest MBPs I have tried so far.

I created instaDMG 10.6.6 vanilla using 10.6.3 retail DVD on new 15" mbp but didn't work.

I am now creating SIU image using 10.6.6 DVD came with the new 15" MBP.

Will report back with the result.

For InstaDMG you have to use the grey discs included with the new machine. Once 10.6.7 comes out you should be able to use the 10.6.3 retail DVD.

Only for Apple-branded SSD's on said new hardware. I also don't know if it will support TRIM on older hardware like the Air/old MBP's with Apple SSD's.

I have used InstaDMG 1.6rc1. But when you run InstaUp2Date, it throws
errors.

I haven't personally yet, but on the InstaDMG-Dev mailing list someone posted their catalog file which they stated works. Just make sure you are using the grey discs that came with the new MacBook Pros, and make sure you are doing everything on the new machine. Here is the output for the catalog file. Once 10.6.7 comes out everything should be unified again, well at least until they release new imacs, etc.

I use instaDMG all the time, and it doesn't *REQUIRE* the grey discs, in
fact they (the forum / support) tells you not to. They rather you use
the retail disc then load the patches on top.

That doesn't necessarily apply when new hardware comes out that requires
you to use the grey discs, and I've never really had a problem doing
either of them.

By use of the grey discs I only meant when new hardware comes out mid point release. For my standard build I use the 10.6.3 retail dvd and build from there. But when new machines come out and they have different builds it's best to use the grey discs that came with the machine.

Once 10.6.7 comes out I will go back to using the 10.6.3 and then apply the 10.6.7 combo, which should have all the necessary hardware drivers.

I'll also only use the the 10J321 build on the new MBPs, I'll stick w/ default build for every other machine.

+1 to making sure InstaDMG is up-to-date.

Why not start with the 10.6 universal and use InstaDMG to update to current 10.6.6. Wouldn't this leave it hardware version agnostic?

It would for all Macs that support Snow Leopard and was released with 10.6.5 or earlier.
The new MacBook Pro computers require a special build that only comes on the bundled discs.
At least until the 10.6.7 combo is released...hence my "Forked again by Apple" comment. :)

My intentions were share this info with those that were not aware of this
fact.

Usually with the release of a new model, a few people new to imaging Macs
inquire as to why their existing images no longer work. I thought it might
be helpful to those folks.

So what Apple ships on a DVD with computers is different from what is available on software update. Why don't they keep the update via SU "current"? That would make this all much simpler.
