I've seen this problem for a while, but now we have an exec asking about it. For some reason when we go to add a folder or rename one, the text/edit box acts as if you press enter or click off the edit. Often leaving "New Folder" as the name of the folder. You can go back and rename it again, but that's an extra step. Rarely does it seem that we can create/rename the folder w/o issue.

Oh, it's been happening for quite some time, but has continued even into version 14.3.5

I don't even get a chance to enter a folder name before "Untitled Folder" becomes a folder. If I go back and select it, it lets me change the name no problem. But I don't have the option of changing the name at creation time.

v14.3.5 on 10.8.4

It's a known issue. Not sure how much of a priority it is for Microsoft to fix vs. working on the next version of Office for Mac.
