What driver compatibility issues "Exactly" are you running into?
Do you have the correct driver for the printer on the Mac? Is it a PostScript printer?
Are your machines AD bound? Have you tried SMB print queues?
One thing to note is that OS X computers will not use the driver that is installed on the print server, it needs to be installed locally for it to work.
Also, +1 for SMB shares. LPD was deprecated on Windows Server 2012.
