Hello,
I have done a bit of a search and really only came up with old topics. I'm hoping philosophies/technologies might have moved on a bit since those threads.
We are embarking on a laptop programme with 13" MacBook Airs next year. We have around 700 students who will all be receiving a new machine. This year, we have been running around 120 MacBook Air machines in one of our year groups with great success, but they are not local admins of the machines.
It has been decided that the actual roll out of the machines will be with the students as local administrators, which in principle I agree with, but I have some concerns around the practicalities of this approach.
I was hoping to get some thoughts from the community about some of the following questions, and perhaps this might open into some healthy discussion around some of your philosophies and technical solutions. If you can spend the time to help me with the questions/concerns I have, and even get involved a little deeper, I would be forever grateful.
1) What are the views out there regarding local administrator access? What do you do? Does it cause more problems than it solves, or is "letting go" the current trend with respect to this?
2) If local admin rights are given to the student, how to you stop them from removing the management framework/ssh user/everything that casper needs to function correctly, or again, is "letting go" the current trend?
3) Bound or non-bound accounts? We are running bound accounts with local homes currently, and have no issues except for the odd keychain drama when a password is changed on the directory server. What are the trends out there with regards to this?
I have a few more questions, but might just start with those and see how we go.
Again, your time and thoughts are greatly appreciated.
Cheers,
Gavin
