Can you partition the disk and install on the other partition?

How? When you click install it restarts from DVD. I have created a ghost image with iMac but didn't work with XServe.

I don't have XServe to create ghost image (all in data centres). Will Mac Pro image work I wonder?

Add a partition to the server and restore DMG of the 10.6 server disc (size depends on RAM, etc.).

Boot from the new partition and launch Disk Utility to create an image from the current server (pays to have that full metal backup). ;)

Upgrade main partition to 10.6.

We always add a spare partition to our Xserves (the few we have left) for this kind of thing.

Are you saying restore the partition with "Mac OS X 10.6 Server Install
Disc" then boot to this partition?

What is the difference between booting up from the DVD and the partition
HD? They were both gonna get IP from DHCP (if its enabled) correct?

So if the dhcp is enabled then I can scan the cable range from ARD and
connect using first 8 digit serial number of the xserve as pw to connect.

AFAIK this should only work, if I am on the same subnet. But I am not! Am
I missing something here??

That link describes the process for installing on a headless Mac Mini, but
the process would be the same for an XServe. I would probably do this:

1. Create a DMG of the SL Server install disk.

2. If you do not have a spare partition on the server, create one by
   splitting an existing partition.

3. Restore the DMG to that new partition.

4. Follow the steps outlined in the link above.

You can also find instructions out there for doing the initial setup via the
terminal using tools like sa_srchr. Another quick search turned up this

Thanks for the link Steve. I always have a Restore partition on my servers. I will have a crack at it tomorrow. I think we have dhcp enabled too.

Just to share my experience here.

I have created the dmg from the Server installer DVD. Copied over to the
server then restored to one of the partitions of the server (named it same
as the DVD ­ not important). Then I have run the installer with the below
command to install it to the main partition. (I had the third partition
cloned as a backup)
open /Volumes/Mac OS X Server Install
Disc/System/Installation/Packages/MacOSXServerInstall.mpkg

I have used the off-line build method. By creating "Auto Server Setup"
folder on root folder of the other partition (this folder can go any of the
partition's root folder) and put the pre-created "AutoServerSetup.plist" xml
file in this directory. This xml file has created from Server Admin.app from
my Mac.

Tested several times with couple of Macs with or without network cable
attached and it worked fine.

But this has still failed on real server! This was due to second network
cable on my server (see below kb)

Thanks to data centre guy. As soon as he pulled the second cable all worked
flawlessly. But I had to remove the ".AppleSetupDone" file in
/private/var/db/ to ensure the Setup Assistance kicks-off from the 10.6
volume.
