We are replacing our fleet of classroom iPads with newer models.
The new iPads have all been loaded in via DEP, and placed into PreStage Enrollment groups for each year/grade level.



How do I get the new ones all going before unmanaging the old ones? Won't I exceed our Jamf Device Count?



The plan had been to decommission all of the old iPads, then start up the new ones, allow them to enrol themselves and place them in the appropriate classroom.
However, the delivery didn't arrive until after the holiday period and now we're faced with having no iPads for days while we roll over the new ones.

The Device Count isn't a hard line number. Jamf allows you to exceed that number without issue, but when your renewal period comes up, if the devices are still Managed, then Jamf will charge you for the additional devices. If the devices are Unmanaged or removed from Jamf prior to your renewal date, then you will not be charged.



The main consideration will be your app license counts. If you don't have enough app licenses for all of the devices that you are enrolling (based on the scope of the apps of course), then the apps won't install until you either a) buy more app licenses or b) remove the old devices to free up licenses
