I have an issue with needing to support new 10.8.2 machines with both FCP 7 & FCP X. Has anyone come across needing to do this? If so can you give me pointers or advice to consider while doing this.

+26I actually just got done with a deployment of 2-3 machines in this exact situation. Our Radio/TV area needs to keep Final Cut 7 for older projects and use Final Cut X for newer ones. I modeled our plan on Apple article http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4781 Specifically I choose the second option in that article that assumes Final Cut Studio is in its original location already and I choose to put Final Cut Pro X in a slightly different place.
Basically what I do is use the FinalCutStudio.mpkg installer I developed using this article: http://afp548.com/mediawiki/index.php/Final_Cut_Studio_3_Installer_for_Deploy_Studio. I try to keep with this minorly modified version of Apple's MPKG installers though as the Final Cut Pro 7 installer is quite complex and has so many numerous scripts running during install that I just feel repackaging this with Composer would somehow shoot me in the foot.
I have it go down as a first boot package (doesn't matter the order though). I then get it the serial number and the extra content for it an a different package after that.
Finally with Final Cut X, I go to a clean machine, download the most recent build from the App Store. I create a folder in /Applications named "Final Cut Pro". I drag all three downloaded apps (Compressor, Motion and Final Cut Pro X) in that folder and set the proper permissions. I then make a Composer DMG package of this. It doesn't really matter what order Final Cut Pro X gets laid down especially as it is going to /Applications/Final Cut Pro. As a DMG, I have it go down on the original machine with all the other dmgs.
In our case I also add in our user documentation folder the white paper called Final Cut Pro X for Final Cut Pro 7 Editors PDF along with other documentation and put that as a package after Final Cut is deployed. http://images.apple.com/finalcutpro/docs/Final_Cut_Pro_X_for_Final_Cut_Pro_7_Editors.pdf
I have tested this on 10.8.2 and it seems to work well though I'm interested in reading the link that the previous poster added. I'll note after reading I seem happy with my methods even more.
