We manage our ipads using Jamf Pro.

We load the students google email accounts onto the device using a Jamf configuration profile with the Google payload.  The mail account will appear on the device (ipad iOS mail app) and prompt user to enter google password.  The user enters the password and the iOS mail app will display the students google email.

However,  several times through out each day, the iOS mail app will stop displaying google email and prompt user to re-enter their google password.   After re-entering the google credentials, the Mail app will not always start working again.

I have had Jamf support review our config file with the google payload - they said it is set up correctly.  I have contacted Google and they said that it is a Jamf issue.

  1. Has anyone else experienced this issue?
  2. How did you resolve it?
  3. thanks.

Not a google shop here, but I’ve seen this happen when something server-side is changed...like if 2FA is enabled.

Could also be a configuration issue on your Jamf payload.

We manage our iPads with Jamf Pro. We do not deploy the gmail settings with Jamf.  They are entered manually.  Every fall most students are prompted to re-enter passwords in the mail app.  For some we have to delete and re-enter the users credentials in order for their gmail accounts to work.  From what we can tell there is no setting in Google that it prompting this to occur.  Our staff do not encounter a similar issue.

Have you invoked your Google rep?  Sometimes Apple Mail can cause that… but more times than not it’s due to a platform setting in Google causing it.

Thanks for the reply.

Yes, I have contacted Google support, but they have immediately pointed to Jamf as the issue.  Do you know what Google settings could be causing this behavior?

We did work with Jamf to change a config file that restricted making account changes to see if this might be the cause.

Everything I’ve seen it’s pointed to Google’s MFA (2FA or whatever you want to call it).  They have another mail setting for third party setup.  I forget what it’s called, but a mix of that and that third party “switch” can cause that.  Granted, it increases the security holes, but it stops the prompts.

Google is really bad about pointing fingers too.  Have you attempted to use a vanilla enrollment (no configs associated - just enrolled into jamf) and set up gmail in apple mail?
