I'm planning to upgrade to 10.20 from 10.12. This requires upgrading to java 11 first then an incremental upgrade to 10.14 before upgrading to 10.20. That's fine. I can do that.
What I'm confused about is the system requirements page for upgrading to 10.20. It shows as a recommended database version is mysql 5.7.27. Which is the version we are on. https://docs.jamf.com/10.20.0/jamf-pro/release-notes/Jamf_Pro_System_Requirements.html

but when reading through the documentation of the upgrade, it tells me to upgrade to mysql 8. which that upgrade makes this upgrade way more complicated. https://docs.jamf.com/10.20.0/jamf-pro/install-guide-linux/Upgrading_Jamf_Pro_Using_the_Installer.html

Does anyone know if I have to upgrade to MySQL 8 for version 10.20? or can I stay at 5.7.27?

Thanks!

@mikesmithwsu You'll want to keep Incremental Upgrade Scenarios bookmarked

You need to ensure you have Java updated and will also need to upgrade MySQL to 8

then why does it say 5.7.27 is recommended?

@mikesmithwsu I'd take it that MySQL 8 is recommended if your environment supports it, and 5.7.x is the alternative if not. For example, you can't use MySQL 8 on Amazon RDS so if you are considering moving from an on-prem to AWS hosted Jamf Pro install you'd want to stick with 5.7.27 to make that transition easier.

IMO the #1 thing to consider when doing the 10.12. to 10.20 transition is that it can take a long time for the JSS to start up for both the intermediate and final JSS update. Be prepared for that, and definitely back up your database before each update.
