I’m trying to figure out how to configure the passcode to be 6 digits instead of 8 characters, including uppercase and lowercase letters and numbers.

Creating a configuration profile will allow you to select the minimum number of characters required.

You can do this as well in Blueprints using the “Passcode Policy” component.

I have tried that. The passcode profiles fail. When I go into a user in jamf getting pulled from ASM it still says complex for shared iPad. We are using google for sync with classlink as directory sync.

@bfarrell -- just for clarity, you tried:

  1. configuring via profile and it failed?
  2. configuring via blueprint and that also failed?

Thanks for helping me get the full picture :)

Ahh i apologize i missed the “Shared iPad” part. I have not tried shared iPads yet due to securly filtering issues.

We have two iPad carts in a library. Since it’s not a set class, I’m trying to figure out how we can make this work. We have complex passwords set up, and it’s causing problems because students forget them even though the librarian has made them create a default password by having their initials and birthday. Is there a better way so they can log in with there federated ID with out entering a passcode?

@bfarrell I'm so sorry I missed the fact that these are shared iPads. I was reminded by the team that what you are seeing is expected behavior. When a student signs into a shared iPad, they use their MAA and that is tied to the passcode so we can't ask a shared iPad to configure a passcode with a policy.

I'm wondering if Jamf’s newish app, Class Assigner might help in this scenario. If you're not familiar with it, take a look at the documentation here. It essentially allows a designated “teacher” of a class to assign an iPad to a student. I could see this working in the temporary situation of a student forgetting their password.

I'm glad you brought this up because what you're describing is the exact scenario that makes Jamf’s acquisition of identity Automation so exciting!
