Has anyone worked on 802.1x configs where you've attempted a device AND user auth?

I've only ever configured user based setups – so I'm a little unsure of how you'd go about configuring for both.

Right, but this would be a system profile AND a user profile which would authenticate in a serial fashion – first device, then the user on the device.

Basically 802.1x not a sweet spot for me- so maybe I'm making a mountain out of a mole hill here…

os x can do 3 types of profiles for 802.1x- user, login window, or system.
login window and user profiles are ignored if a system profile is in place, so AFAIK you can't do what you're talking about.
Check this KB article http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3326 (i know it references 10.5, but I've tested using user and login window profiles with Lion, and the system profile does still take precedence. )
