i think it would be helpful for people on the casper list to look outside the mac realm for solutions.

+13true, but one of the problems i've found with the mac admin community is a certain level of myopia that leads to lots of needless wheel reinvention.
there's a huge body of new and old resources that have traditionally grown with other *nix platforms but will work just as easily with os x.
but i digress… not germane to this thread.
