Check in Frequency for different groups....

Are any of you out there in JAMFNation are using custom /Library/LaunchDaemons/com.jamfsoftware.task.1.plist for different groups?

In the environment where I am I have three production groups that I'd like to change the check-in times from every 1/2 hour to once a day. (presently they have scripts that run on startup - check-in and then remove the framework - problem being - machines don't get restarted often...) Also thinking of setting a report day/time.

Would there be any issues you could think of setting this schema up - besides installing the plist as a post installer script?

Actually this is possible. In your JSS, navigate to https://your.jss/tasks.html

Its a semi-hidden location on every JSS, but there you'll be able to edit the existing check in task and create additional ones. You can also change the Scope for them, just like anything else. If the Macs you're looking to target with the different check in frequencies are in groups, it should be easy to limit the scope of the regular every 15/30 one to only some and apply the once a day one to everything else.

Don,

I think we have a better solution: create separate scheduled tasks for the different groups and assign them specifically to smart groups or NOT smart groups.....

I looked into this

awhile back and JAMF strongly discouraged me from doing this.

@jhbush1973 - I can imagine that if not used very carefully, it could certainly cause lots of strange issues. Macs possibly getting more than one check in task launchdaemon and such. That would be why there's no direct link to it in the JSS, but I think as long as its properly thought out and implemented with care, it should be OK. As with anything that would change the 'normal' setup, test, test and do more tests, and use with caution.

Thinking back, we went down this road a couple years ago and our JAMF rep ended up telling us not to create an alternative task. I don't remember the reason, but we ended up developing a different solution. Many ways to skin a cat...just have to make sure you position yourself so you're where you want to be down the road if any issues come up. ;)

Thanks for posting this guys. Never knew about this task interface. The ability to call policies to execute commands on a more customized (and randomized) schedule like this is great.
