Is it possible to create a mobile smart group based on a specific profile being installed? I went to All Criteria->Profile Name and it just pulls up a blank gray screen. I'm running jss 9.0.1.

Yes there is! I am using JSS version 8 so i cant verify it works in 9.
Click the management tab > smart mobile device groups > create group > name it > click configuration profile > profile name > enter your criteria - for example - 8th grade mdm profile - > click save.
I created a smart group for each grade level.
