DEP Conundrum

Hi All!

I am in another community and people were having issues with DEP. This person wanted to take their current iPhones with unsupervised backups and changed them to supervised and he was planning on adding them to DEP with Apple Configurator. From my understadning DEP forces the device to become supervised so you could use an unsupervised backup from the same device and you would be forced to go through DEP.

Somone is saying they added their iPhone 8 to DEP, but were able to go restore from iCloud and never be prompted for DEP. Yes, they verified pre-stage enrollment was ok.

Does anyone know if this is an iPhone 8 issue or am I wrong about backups going on supervised DEP devices.

The last time I looked into this, the situation was that you could not go from unsupervised to supervised and preserve data if you restore on the same device that was used to do the backup. But, by restoring the backup to a different device DEP enrollment and restoring unsupervised data to the device after it is supervised does work. I have not tried this since iOS 11 was released so someone may have updated information.
