Device Enrollment Program - DEP

Hi Guys,

We are ready to go with DEP and its all setup by Apple and we have uploaded the token in JSS and added a server in deploy.apple.com. Now when we enter the serial number of an iPad 2 (2012) then it gives error with device serial number as "serialnumber"not_accessible.

It seems that DEP won't be able to support the old ipads and macbooks and all the New ipads and macbooks not purchased from a Apple reseller and all the refurbished devices from a non-Apple reseller.

So it means that initially DEP implementation would have some of the devices with DEP and other non- DEP. Apple should mention these points on their DEP page.

Any suggestions are welcome.

Is the reseller's DEP ID added to your account?

We have many hundreds of iPad 2s in DEP, though all were purchased from Apple directly. We had some trouble in the beginning as Apple had not initially considered the whole unit replacements that needed to be added back in.... we had about 125 of those in our initial rollout in the fall, but since all have been added to DEP and now when we get replacements from Apple they will go in.
Third party replacements currently can NOT go into DEP, but usually these out of warranty devices are repaired rather than replaced.
This summer we are making a large purchase and do not plan to buy AppleCarePlus, so we either go through Apple for damaged devices and "pay" to keep them in DEP, or hopefully reseller/repair shops will be able to put whole unit replacements into DEP...

You should be able to register Devices for DEP if they are purchase after March 2011 as outlined in the DEP Guide here:

The obvious requirement is that you have purchased them from a authorized Channel Partner that can provide you with a DEP Reseller ID and is willing to handle the Device Registration for you.

2nd Hand Devices can not be added to DEP at this point, only new purchases.

As for Device replacements, that should work meanwhile if the replacement takes place at a Apple Authorized Partner with the required authorizations. So - thats worth asking for :)
