After doing what Apple says we are still experiencing slowness traversing SMB shares on High Sierra. I'm wondering if others have experienced this and what was their solution?

Looking in to the High Sierra SMB issues, I came across Adjust SMB browsing behavior in macOS High Sierra 10.13 https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT208209. This address, Speed up browsing on network shares, Force the Finder to gather all metadata first, and Disable directory caching.
