This will sound very elementary and hoping it is for someone, but for the life of me, I cannot figure out how to display the Computer Name (or hostname) at the Mac OS X 10.8 login window.
You would think this would be a simple matter of going to the Management tab under Computer Management, going to Configuration Profiles, creating a profile with a Login Window payload, setting the profile to "Computer Level", and under Heading, choosing Name. Unfortunately, this does NOT work.
I need this info displayed as our users are trained to report trouble tickets using the Computer Name that shows at the login window. Under 10.6, this worked well, but 10.8, not so much.
Anyway, if someone knows how to do this simply (preferably with a Configuration Profile), that would be awesome.
Thanks,
blackholemac

You can set static login text. Top right of login window if you click on time it rotates between computer name/IP address and maybe a 3rd info item.

I want to thank you CasperSally...seems like a stupid question, but yeah...didn't realize clicking on the clock at the login window allows one to see the computer name in 10.8.
That's definitely what I needed. I have a Login Banner setup to put the legal mumbo jumbo on there and that works well, but was trying to figure out how to get the Computer Name so folks can file trouble tickets.
