Question

iLife '09 install

I am trying to figure out how to add iLife'09 (a metapackage from the install DVD) into my workflow. I have an unbooted install as the base and a number of packages and repackaged packages that I use to install most of our software. I'd rather not repackage iLife. It installs just fine through ARD, but seems to fail when trying to install it using casper imaging or policies.

What I have tried is: - Install during the initial imaging workflow - doesn't work. I kind of expected that.
- Cache package and install "at reboot". - Sits at the "casper is installing additional software" screen after the restart.
- Policy to cache iLife09.mpkg + install cached packages. It gets called using the jamf command: jamf policy -trigger iLife09. It doesn't seem to work either.

Before I spend a bunch of time figuring what is happening, is anyone successfully installing iLife09 from the install DVD?

Thanks!
Aaron

Aaron-

I don't think casper likes mpkg's. I know it didn't like them in the past.

It needs to be a DMG or a pkg.

If you have composer, you can install ilife 09 on a mac, and use the predefined software option to create a dmg for deployment.
or
you can take a standard snapshot - install the software - composer compares the difference and makes a DMG or pkg for deployment.
your choice.

Casper will do mpkg, I use a number of them , but can't help with iLife ad I built a composer package as I don't see any issues with that.

Do you get any log errors, maybe iLife runs a post install script that fails

I think someone mentioned that the apostrophy in the Apple package name
Casper had a problem with. As soon as they removed the apostrophe from the
package name before uploading, it was fine.

(I.e. "iLife '09.mpkg" became "ilLife09.mpkg" or similar)

Also, one thing I've found with mpkgs is that for some reason, when
uploaded via Casper Admin, they don't gain all the permissions down to the
lowest level of the package. So, when you go and distribute it you get
errors. I've found this mainly with Microsoft patches, but also others.
The solution for me has *always* been to use Server Admin to re-propogate
the permissions through the CasperShare share. The fix permissions button
in the JSS Setup Utility won't do it.

I use composer to build my iLife package. I then compiled it into my image via Casper Admin since iLife is standard on every Mac.

I'd just be careful with that RE licensing…

Apple has that new licensing thing, where you pay a flat rate for x
amount of years and get all the updates across the board. Plus every
Mac you buy comes with iLife and since we bought all 8,000 of ours with
in the same 1 year span, they all have 09 on them, which doesn't really
matter since we bought that upgrade protection edu license thingy.

I don't know the ins and outs as I am not in charge of spending money!

I’m pulling this from the deep dark recesses of my brain here but the iLife you get with new Macs doesn’t come with iDVD. To get iDVD you must buy the full suite.

Well, it sounds like repackaging is the best alternative. The two suggestions that sounded like they might help (re-propagating permissions and renaming) still mentioned potential issues. I sometimes don't like to repackage things - especially when there are a number of pre/post scripts involved. I was just figuring that I was doing something incorrectly as I can install it without issues through ARD and my image from before was an apple image that already had it installed..

Thanks for all of the tips.

I successfully use the iLife 09.mpkg in my build process.
There is no need to re-package it with composer.
There are two things to make it work.

  1. You must use the 9.0.3 version of the iLife 09.mpkg.
This is the version that comes with the 10.6 Mac Box Set.
Go to your nearest Apple Store and buy it. (Just do it!)

  2. Remove the apostrophe from the name before uploading it. "iLife 09.mpkg"

Works for me with every build configuration.
