I understand that JAMF Pro allows the option of updating Macs from a Software Update Server. Is this an option for iOS devices as well?
We have ~800 devices in house and our network infrastructure is very good. We'd like to setup a server locally so that software updates for our devices are drawn from this local server rather than Apple servers and thus the internet bandwidth.
Any ideas? Is this a thing?
+36What you want is a content caching server.
Any Mac can be a content caching server. Open System Preferences > Sharing and enable the service at the bottom. iOS devices must still be able to communicate with Apple, however, Apple will redirect them to your server. The first time an app or update is requested, the server downloads from Apple and then the iOS device downloads from the server. Afterward, the server keeps the content to distribute locally.
You can open Activity Monitor on the server and click the last tab to view activity.
A dedicated Mac mini works great for this and will serve on average about 700 clients effectively depending on usage. The link above can show you how to scale to support more devices, enable logging, etc.
