If we start using the new Managed Apple IDs for our students next year, can they still logout of that ID on the ipad and login as their 'old' Apple ID to get any backup'd data?

+12Yes, but then you need to ask yourself why move to managed Apple IDs in the first place. Because the students can't download apps with those Apple IDs, we'll be skipping them for now.
+11Thank you for the responses. This is easing some fears. If you are using a Shared Ipad you cannot login/logout iCloud but standard 1:1 you can.
