Tried creating my own script, which didn't do what I wanted. Downloaded, configured the msupdatehelper script and it's doing the same thing, run the script and following output is:

Detecting and downloading updates...
Cannot determine Update Assistant state.
Update Assistant is available.
Update Assistant is available.
Update Assistant is available.
Update Assistant is available.
Update Assistant is available.
Update Assistant is available.

Any ideas?

@ChrisTech If you try MSUpdateTrigger does it install any updates?

What version of MAU do you have installed?

ChrisTech

I just installed 4.35 this morning. I thought updating MAU would fix it. :)

Do you have a Configuration Profile installed with an Applications & Custom Settings payload for the com.microsoft.autoupdate2 domain with your MAU configuration listing apps that it should install updates for? If not I'm drawing a blank on a link with full details, but this will get you started: https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/t5/office-365-blog/new-functionality-to-make-it-easier-to-custom...

I've seen the same thing in my environment lately. It's odd. I know that at some point when I had used msupdate from the command line that it was correctly showing and installing updates, but just recently when trying it again it's just repeating the same "Update Assistant is available." line over and over again, just like what @ChrisTech is seeing. I don't have an explanation for it. I'm wondering if something broke with a recent MAU update?

I do have one in place. I can always old school it and distribute through my file shares but I wanted MS to do the transferring of data - less strain on my distribution points.

Yeah, unfortunately the release quality of MAU lately has been, to put it politely, variable. When it works though the delta updates it will use are much smaller than the standalone updates that could be hosted on a Jamf Pro DP.

@ChrisTech Out of curiosity, if you enable automatic install and set a deadline does MAU successfully update a machine where calling msupdate fails? The code path for automatic updates definitely seems to be getting more QA attention that the scripted update path.

I'll play around with it. Thanks @sdagley

I can answer for myself only, but if I set MAU to do automatic updates, it successfully enforces updates after the specified time elapses. That seems to work fine. It's just when downloading/installing from the cli msupdate that I have had issues. I can also, of course, download any updates from macadmins.software and push those without an issue in a Jamf policy. But like @ChrisTech, I'd prefer not to have to download large updates and then upload them into Jamf, occupying valuable space on my Jamf sharepoint and then pushing those out. Since these updates are coming from a trusted source, I'd prefer to use the msupdate method of installing them.

@ChrisTech @mm2270 MAU 4.36 isn't enabled for MAU's auto update yet, but it is available for download via https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=830196. Might be worth installing and seeing if it fixes the msupdate issues.

Hi, I installed MAU 4.38, still getting those issues..

Issue still persists for me as well on version 4.39. Sounds like it's broken on the app side.

Is there any update on this? I'm getting the same error message and MAU would be the a simple option for latest updates. 😞

@jaycruz145  I've stopped using the scripts to drive msupdate in favor of using the automatic update capability in MAU in conjunction with the new deferred update channels. Take a look at this session by @pbowden from JNUC 2021 for more info: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7cFKXl4qI00&list=PLlxHm_Px-Ie1EIRlDHG2lW5H7c2UYvops&index=35
