Question

Netboot with Windows 2012

Forum|alt.badge.img+5

Hi,

We are using a Windows 2012 JSS and Windows 2012 Distribution Point.

What is the best way to setup Casper Imaging using Netboot?

Do I need to use a Mac Mini to setup the netboot, and then point the packages in the configuration to the Windows Dist Point?

Or do I just setup a second Dist Point on a Mac Mini that replicates?

Our old system uses a Mac Dist Point, but we are try to move away from this.

Thanks!

You could use a Mac Mini with server.app and then create a netboot image with AutoCasperNBI (https://macmule.com/projects/autocaspernbi/)

Or you could create a virtual NetSUS appliance (https://jamfnation.jamfsoftware.com/viewProduct.html?id=180&view=info)

All the netboot server has to do is netboot....it doesn't have to interact with the JSS at all. You can use OS X Server, Reposado, BSDPy or anything that can NetBoot. Once booted just run the Casper Imaging app from the NetBoot and it can connect to your JSS and DPs wherever they live now.

We use Windows 2012 leveraging the Windows Deployment Service to serve the netboot.nbi.
We use the bless command to point to the Windows 2012 servers.
We removed all are mac minis and we just use Windows 2008 R2 or 2012 servers for FileSharing or Distribution Points.

Netboot on Windows is asking for trouble. There's a reason why all the 3rd party solutions (BDSPy , NetSUS) all run on Unix.
