Office - msupdate issue ?

I have seen the tutorial from Paul Bowden on MSupdate, but for some reason one command does not work for me on updating

As the screenshot show I am running an older powerpoint (15.39) version and in the terminal try and update it to 16.19. However, there is not found any updates and think I have checked the parameters many many times, but cannot find the reason why this won't work

Do anyone have a clue ?

@KRIECCO , question for you. You're attempting to pull down 16.19 however 16.20 is the latest. I'm wondering if it's working as advertised, it's looking for 16.19.18xxxx version, but it's not available. ? You follow? What happens if you were to have ./msupdate -I -a PPT315 -v 16.20.181208 ?

@KRIECCO At first I thought this was a Office 2016 vs 2019 thing, but I see you have an O365 subscription from your screenshot. As a test... does this work if you manually install the latest Microsoft AutoUpdate 4.6, and then run msupdate?

I am already updated to 4.6 - but it could be the reason if these commands does not apply for O365 subscription?. Unless someone else has some ideas how to solve it on O365 subscription software ? and what is best practise for these. kind of versions

I actually working on the same. Found the mshelperupdate script and typing an specific version, but it just tells that no updates are available no matter which version I Try
Does there exist other working scripts, to update to specific versions of office?

We had the issue that the msupdate script "stopped working" when we upgraded from 16.16.x to 16.19 and it simply did not provide the updates to 16.20, so i looked into the following things:

and by "simply" changing the product identifiers from the 2016 version identifiers to the 2019 identifiers, it seems to work again and looks like that now:

For troubleshooting you can simply try running

cd /Library/Application Support/Microsoft/MAU2.0/Microsoft AutoUpdate.app/Contents/MacOS

./msupdate -l

locally on the machine and check if the updates are found or not.

We had a similar issue last week where our O365 apps were either not updating or updating to the Office 2016 channel (16.16.x) instead of the 2019 channel. We are all O365, so all apps should update to the 2019 channel. As @AndreasRumpl suggests above, we modified the msupdate script from @pbowden to point to the 2019 versions and now it's fine.

For some reason when running the script it only update word to latest - the other are just left alone.

I checked the new naming in the script you posted and looks correct.

BTW - have also updated to MAU 4.7

@KRIECCO Seems to be a known issue with the original script. It is documented here: https://github.com/pbowden-msft/msupdatehelper/issues/7

Unfortunately also some of the Macs in our infrastructure seem to show this behaviour, but it seems that the version keys(?) for MAU are updated at first launch of the app. So in my understanding: if a user used the corresponding app after the last update installation, msupdatehelper is able to look for the new version.

We hope for an update of the script (or MAU) that will solve this issue and we run the msupdatehelper currently on a more frequent basis (twice a week / once a day with client side limitation to specific days) to provide "fast updates" to our users.

(BTW: We usually push out the new updates to our testing machines on Tue/Wed and to "all clients" on Thu/Fri/Mon to circumvent possible issues with the latest release(s))

Arh ok - I see. So you push out the update packages direct to the clients and not through script download?

No, currently we do only deploy the latest installer at first enrollment/installation and after that we only use the update script and monitor it via the jamf patch management.

As we only have a 4% gap between the most used/updated and the least used/updated Office app, that currently works for us.

If there would be a very important fix that needs to be pushed out immediately, then we would push it via munki (which we use for our patch management of internal apps and as an internal app store) or via Jamf.

After some testing, am i the only noticing the Dock flickers when the script is running? As it it tries to open something closes it the same second?
