running jss on linux in a vm

I'm not running the whole thing on Linux, just the database. Jamf
won't provide the same level of support running outside of OS X from
my understanding. You will need to manually handle updates, and won't
be able to make full use of the jss setup utility.

I'm actually flying to the west coast on Monday to review the Casper implementation at a client site. We're very much interested in getting JSS off of Apple hardware. I'd love to see your notes. If only to show our Linux engineers (who might step up to the plate on the MySQL/ Tomcat side if we go that route). :)

Just for the record, anyone who wants to put a document together you can create an account on my site, and I can give you access to create content. You can use screen shots, code blocking and so forth. You will get full credit too. This way everyone could see it, you get credit for it, and I get more content for my site! It is win-win-win.

That way you can go to the URL and see it instead of digging through mailing list posts.

I just moved our JSS install (still at 7.1) from an old G4 Xserve to a
virtual linux server (Lucid Lynx 64-bit Server on a VMware cluster + SAN).
It's only been about a day, but so far so good. Great performance
(especially when compared to the G4 Xserve). Install was easy
enough---minor tweaking required for, for example, creating a keystore for
tomcat and referencing it (if you want to use SSL).

I'll post my work here with this (setup, upgrades, etc.) if there's
interest.
