Hi Everyone

After upgrading to 9.1 and 8.72, as discussed above, the web clip deployed to iOS7 devices is no longer a full screen web clip.

The ability to use URL handlers in full screen web clips is no longer available in iOS7. This means Self Service would no longer be able to deploy ebooks or unmanaged apps if it was still full screen. Because of this, we made the decision to use a non-full screen web clip on iOS 7 for Self Service.

We have a radar open about the use of URL handlers in iOS7 with a full screen web clip. RADAR 14848305.

Thank you for all the feedback. We are investigating other technologies to make this a better experience for the end users moving forward.

Response I got on Twitter:

From @JAMFSupport:

"The web clip is no longer full screen in 9.1. Due to security changes in iOS 7, it opens up in Safari"

Well, this sort of makes since since it was really always a web page, just that before it was able to take advantage of the Webkit engine and the webclip functionality to appear as a full screen app. I guess Apple is doing away with that function, for security reasons as noted.

If you ask me, its time for JAMF to consider making a full iOS app to handle Self Service. I fully understand the advantage of webclips in that no actual app bundle needs to be downloaded, as well as the fact that webclips can be locked down to the profile, and thus not easily deleted like apps can. But given this change, its almost like the magic curtain is being drawn back, revealing to end users what it actually is. Could be a non-issue, but could also lead to some confusion.
Besides, it seems to me the user community has been looking for more functionality out of the Self Service "app" under iOS, and a full app bundle could be the answer to get there. Webclips can only do so much.

So Full screen web clips still work. I think we need someone to look at this as a bug, then.

This is what I got:

A little update on this issue here. This is actually not a defect. Under iOS 7 we can no longer open the app store from full-screen web clip links. We're not sure if this is intended or a bug, but we've reached out to Apple regarding the issue.

That's the latest I have, hopefully we come up with a resolution for this soon, but for now that is the way it works, or doesn't work based on whether you're a glass half empty or half full type of person.

Hopefully that clears things up!

Thanks,

I've made a full screen webclip with the same URL that original self service webclip had. pushed it into device, opened apps tab and successfully installed an AppStore app.
