@Sandy as @nigelmarrion mentions, if push notifications for email is important to you then you should stick with the Exchange setup. Exchange gives you mail, contacts, calendars and reminders where as the Google Account setup gives you mail, contacts, calendars and notes. If you use the Gmail iOS app you can also get push notifications as well. But that app isn't as nicely integrated into iOS as the standard Mail app is.
