Size of NetInstall Set

Are the NetInstall set created from Casper NetInstall Creator suppose to be 8 GB and more ? I remember the ones created off NetRestore were around 1.8 GB. I think the size of this NetInstall image is dragging down my mac when they are all booting off this netinstall set.

Any have this happen ?

Mount the image, and take out all the unneeded apps. For example, when I create mine, I take out all the iLife apps, iTunes, and so forth and basically just leave the utilities in there that I want to run from the command line. This can cut down your net boot installer image down significantly.

Hi Jason

The size of the netboot set had no impact on the imaging, it could be 1gb or 100gb and it would make no difference, the more important concern is your bandwidth, naturally the more macs you run off the netboot server the more bandwidth you need.

The netboot server uses tftp to copy the image to the client, only a small amount of the image is stored on the client so the size of the netboot set is not relevant

Yes Tom but netboot doesnt matter on the sizeof the image, i have netboot macs from a 20-40Gb image which had final cut in etc and it it has no impact on performance, my netboot set is about 8GB and i can image 30 odd macs off one server and the bandwidth and memory usage on the server is so low, your just wasting your time taking apps out when it makes no difference on performance, it just means it takes less space up on the server,

If your having performance issues then your should look elsewhere for the answer
