Hi all,
I'm working on our first remote cluster client deployment. So far everything seems to be going well, except imaging. (Oh, that little thing? :0 ) It seems that I'm having some NetBoot issues, where things are p-a-i-n-fully slow to start; Casper Imaging does launch, but is stuck on "Initializing..."
Of course, this is all a bit hampered by not actually being at the location, and not having knowledgeable help on the other end of the phone. *bangs head on desk*
The boot image itself is fine, I tgz'd it last night, scp'd it locally and set up another server to test here. Network throughput doesn't appear to be the problem - I can copy a very large file from the new server to the test client in minutes. Network admins have confirmed that the switches should be open & passing the needed protocols (it wouldn't netboot at all if they weren't, I assume). Permissions on the volume that houses the /Library/Netboot folders are set to ignore (I don't keep them on the system volume).
Anyway, I did find this morning some curious entries in /etc/bootpd.plist, showing local DNS addresses & such. (The server was initially configured here & then shipped to London for deployment.) I have moved this file off & had the OS recreate it, and after turning on NetInstall services again, I see that the file was updated with relevant local addresses. I'm hoping, at this point, that it is just something screwy with the bootpd.plist, and things will work - I will be able to test this a bit later today, after the machine is free. (VERY time-consuming troubleshooting from here...I've been doing only this all week!)
SO: being Friday afternoon, and being that I need to get this furshlugginer server working (or convince someone to send me to London...) I wanted to reach out to the JAMF Nation Brain Trust for any other ideas, opinions, or gotchas relating to NetInstall under 10.8.2 using Server.app 2.2.
