So, since I don't have a website anymore, I PDF'd the SNMP primer I'd written a while ago. It's not changed much, snmp's a pretty stable protocol.
I figured this was the group worth going through the trouble for. Enjoy!

Sorry, it's saying the link is disabled for me.

Oh for pete's sake dropbox, a security issue? It's a PDF with no scripting on SNMP. The only security issue is that you might get a neck pain from falling asleep while reading it.
Maybe this one?

Yep, that worked!

Why it got disabled: http://thenextweb.com/insider/2014/05/06/dropbox-patches-shared-link-vulnerability-disables-sharing-of-affected-files-for-a-few-days/

Thanks Chris, I was just going to post on that. Dropbox's blog post on it:

and there are URL links in the PDF.

ahhhhhh bummer, it's been a while since I tuned in last. So where are you posting your daily Adobe tirades these days? I'm sure you have some colorful opinion on Creative Cloud...

I'm out of the public criticism market.

Then is there a way we can subscribe to your private criticisms? I really miss AMB (as I drink coffee from my AMB mug).

@johncwelch definitely good to see you in the JAMF community. Are you guys using (or planning in using) it?

Not per se, we're really quite small in terms of that (normally < 200 users). But, I like the community here a *lot*, and I end up evangelizing the heck out of Casper et al anyway. If nothing else, they are doing some of the best documentation anywhere, and as you know, I am a bit of a fiend about that.
This is a case of a (technically) non-customer liking the company and the people in the company enough to show up and help as I can pretty much based on that.

Casper was shoved down my throat. After a few months of learning it, I went for CCA. I passed, but it was tough (Miles Leacy was our instructor). I'm sure you'll fly through it once you've used it for a while. We've used Casper it to manage 2,800 Macs at a movie company, 1,800 corporate Macs and 14,000 retail iOS devices at a retailer, and now 1,000+ Macs in finance. If you design it right, it's very scalable and reliable. There are other pretty well known companies using Casper, notice this headless DMZ'd MDM instance... ;)
Out of the box, Casper does a lot, but once you start tailoring it for your environment, it can do a lot more. Most companies are fine with just using Casper, since it meets their requirements. A lot of shops transitioned over from ARD or sneaker-net, so it's a huge improvement with substantial ROI.
On the flip side, there are more and more environments mixing tools since no one tool can do everything well. Munki does a fantastic job of software deployment/patching. DeployStudio has great imaging capabilities (er, lack of ARD support for Mavericks Runtime notwithstanding). AutoDMG is great for making non-booted OS X images.
You might want to jump on the ##osx-server IRC, where they discuss all these tools:

That's the power of Casper - doesn't force you down any path, it enables you to decide what's best for you and it doesn't get in the way. As Casper matures I'm sure the trend will continue, offering more extensibility. The company is growing, and the community is growing. And you're absolutely right, it's a GREAT community, very welcoming and helpful, and *it* doesn't force you down any path either. :)
Hopefully we'll see you at JNUC 2014? Last year 1,200 people showed up. If you go, I'll finally be able to buy you that beer or two I've owed you for the past few years!

Oh, hi John! You've found where some of us old-timers hang out. Welcome! I'm glad to see you here, and I also miss your website (but understand why you took it down).
Please consider coming to JNUC in October. Don will get you your first drink. I'll buy your 2nd.

LOL, thanks!
I probably won't be at JNUC, not because I don't think it would be awesome, but being as seating is limited, I'd not want to take up a slot that someone actually using Casper/JAMF software could make better use of. Now, if they ever need a speaker on network monitoring...;-)
