I'm wondering if closing all apps when I'm done using my iPhone is better than leaving them open. Does it save battery life to close them all the time or does it not matter much? How does this affect memory usage as well?

+10On the newer phones with newer batteries, swiping up to close out of all apps makes it worse. When you close the app down, the next time you want to start it up it has to load from scratch. The only time I close apps now is when they're doing something weird/not working. Heard this directly from Apple Systems Engineers.
