I am wondering if it is possible to block a managed iPad from using a mobile hotspot as a connection.  I did not find anything in the documentation or configuration profiles that would block using one, only disabling the device from being the hotspot itself.  My goal would be to restrict this option from students who have personal devices in an attempt to circumvent filtering.  So far our filters do not care but it is also another distraction tool.

Are you connecting to a network with a configuration profile? if so, you can restricted unmanaged networks.

Yes we are, that a good idea.  That would affect home networks for students though?

Unfortunately, I think it is all or nothing. You might be able to do something with beacons. Have the restrictions assigned when they’re in the classroom and removed when they leave.

If these “personal devices” are personally owned, your management options are pretty much limited to the data you allow to exist on them. Management of the hardware and iOS itself requires supervision, which Apple reserves for institutional devices.

Sorta, but the blast radius is likely larger than is acceptable. You can block all non-managed networks. However, this will include peoples home wifi, and literally everything else that is not a deployed 802.1x network coming from a Configuration Profile.

I suggest you look in to device side applications to handle filtering like ZTNA tools or similar device side traffic steering tools.
